Winter is coming. And while Game of Thrones may be over, cold weather will never be ended by HBO, so drivers around Grand Rapids and Grandville, MI will need to ensure their vehicle is ready to face the incoming snow and ice.
There are a number of things we encourage our customers to do to ensure that they are prepared.
Check the Tread on Your Tires
It can be tough to remember exactly when the last time you had your tires changed might be, even if you recall that it wasn't cheap. That's perfectly fine, as you can give your tires a quick visual inspection on your own time to figure out if they're still good.
The first thing you should check is the tread depth, which is easily the best indicator of your tires' integrity. Weak tire tread depth is dangerous, particularly in icy conditions, as it is the thing that ensures you have proper traction. Without it, you are at serious risk of an auto accident.
Get an Oil Change
As you drive, your oil gradually accrues dirt and grime, which slows down the rate it can travel through your engine. As the weather turns to freezing and sub-freezing temperatures, it can slow down your oil even more. In addition, there are specific winter-grade oils that are better able to withstand the cold. When you bring your vehicle in for an oil change, be sure to ask for a 5W oil.
Put a Winter Supply Box in Your Vehicle
While we can do everything we can to take care of our car, sometimes life happens, and if you find yourself with a vehicle that is inoperable for whatever reason, you're going to need to be prepared in case you have to wait for help. Having items such as a flashlight, spare gloves, extra blankets, extra clothes, a first-aid kit, high-energy snacks, an ice scraper, and a bag of sand for traction can mean all the difference.
